Appearing on the Late Show with David Letterman for the Stupid Pet Tricks segment was a surreal experience.
In 2014 the talent coordinator of the Late Show tracked us down and invited us to perform our signature ladder climbing trick on the show’s Stupid Pet Tricks Segment. At that moment, I realized all the dog tricks and behavioural training I taught Lexi was time and money well spent.
Rescued Dog from Calgary
I rescued Lexi from the Calgary Humane Society in 2009. She was very reactive to other dogs and people and had food aggression issues. Years of dog behaviour training classes taught me how we can work together to overcome the challenges Lexi faced before I rescued her. My wife and I taught Lexi tricks as that would help solidified our bond with her. Teaching Lexi tricks redirected her focus onto us and away from the hundreds of distractions we encounter daily.
Showing Off Our Talent on David Letterman in New York
While waiting backstage I could barely hear what was happening on stage. The stage manager suddenly directly us onto the stage and into an aura of light. The stage lights were so bright I could barely make out the audience, which only helped my nerves.
Before I knew it, Lexi had her chance to shine. I really enjoyed the banter I had with David Letterman. Dave really enjoyed holding the ladder as Lexi made her way up. When Lexi leapt from the top and into my arms, the ladder kicked back unexpectedly for Dave as you can tell by the expression on his face. Dave’s reaction was priceless as he could not believe he had to hold on that tight.
Top 5 favorite Stupid Pet Tricks of all time
We were contacted later the next year to appear on the Late Show’s final episode. We were selected as one of Dave’s personal top 5 favorite Stupid Pet Tricks of all time. Because of timing challenges and scheduling conflicts with celebrity guests, the Pet Trick segment was cut from the episode.
Nevertheless, being able to say I set foot on the stage at the iconic Ed Sullivan Theater in New York as a guest on the Late Show with David Letterman for his Stupid Pet Tricks Segment will be a memory I will cherish forever.
Who would have thought that a rescue dog from Calgary would make it onto a stage in New York?
